Let’s look at a common situation.

Verma Ji is 60 years old and wants to book an appointment with a local clinic in Varanasi. He opens the clinic’s website on his phone while walking outside. The clinic has a lovely website, but the designer used a very light gray font for the phone number on a white background. Pale grey text is part of the current look, frosted-glass panels included, and it is the usual way a page stops being readable outdoors.

Verma Ji, standing in the bright Indian sun, cannot see the phone number at all. He squints, gets frustrated, closes the site, and searches for another clinic that has clear, readable text.

The clinic lost a patient simply because their website text was too light to read.

Here is why colour contrast is a critical business metric, and how to verify yours in a minute.

What colour contrast is

Colour contrast is the difference in brightness between the text colour (foreground) and the background colour.

If you put yellow text on a white background, it is extremely hard to read. Black text on a white background is very easy to read.

For websites, there are international rules (called WCAG guidelines) that specify exactly how high the contrast ratio must be. If your contrast is too low:

  1. People outdoors can’t read it: High glare from the sun makes low-contrast text disappear on phone screens.
  2. Older customers struggle: Many business owners forget that a significant portion of their paying clientele might wear glasses or have visual fatigue.

The standard, and what it asks for

To make your website professional and accessible to everyone, you should aim for:

  • Normal Text: A contrast ratio of at least 4.5:1 (Level AA) or 7:1 (Level AAA for maximum readability).
  • Large Text: A contrast ratio of at least 3:1.

If your site fails these ratios, it means your colours are too similar and the text is blending into the background.

How to check your colours in three steps

You can check if your brand colours are safe to use together:

  1. Go to our free Solvey Contrast Checker.
  2. Enter your text colour code (e.g., #FFFFFF for white) and background colour code (e.g., #7C3AED for violet).
  3. The tool will instantly calculate the contrast ratio and give you a “PASS” or “FAIL” score for both standard and large text sizes. It will also show you a live preview of how it looks.

In many countries, web accessibility is legally mandated for business websites. In India, it is a recommended web standard to ensure all citizens can access digital information.

You can read the official international rules on the W3C Web Accessibility Initiative Contrast Guide.

Legibility, decided before the design is signed off

Contrast is not a thing to fix at the end. We set the text and background pairs when the palette is chosen, and check them against the standard before anything is built — which is cheaper than discovering at launch that half your body text fails on a phone in daylight.

Contrast and legibility are decided in graphic design and enforced in web development. Email hello@solvey.in for a look at yours.
